Blood Thinners & BDSM
 

Hi there,

I've met someone new and she's fairly experienced in the scene and wants me to "top" her... which I'm usually told I'm pretty good (and caring) about.

However, I also know she's on an anti-coalagent called Warfarin.

I obviously need to be as safe and as cautious as possible and wondered if anyone on here had any experience of playing with people on blood thinners and what their advice would be.

For instance, I understand I mustn't leave bruises but... how does one know how hard one can hit with a flogger etc before it would leave bruises.

Sorry if I'm sounding naive here but I've never played with someone with this condition before and the amount of material I could find on the internet seemed inexplicably minimal.

Any tips appreciated.

I was on Warfarin for a year or so following a thrombosis.

The objective of the treatment is often to return the blood to it's normal or natural clotting value when it has had had a tendency to thicken. It is also sometimes used to slightly thin the blood as a treatment for people with furred arteries / angina.

As far as I know it need not inhibit any 'normal' play. It should not, for instance, give rise to increased bleeding or bruising.

My recommendation would be to start off fairly lightly and build up slowly over several sessions.

Warfarin’s description as a blood thinner is not strictly accurate. Its mode of action in helping blood circulate around the body with less stickiness does not depend on physical thinning. The drug is actually classified as an anticoagulant, its pharmacological activity being the antagonism of the bloods normal coagulation mechanisms. If a patient is on warfarin therapy, a contusion caused by a knock or perhaps bumping into something needs application of pressure over the traumatized site or the application of ice for a few minutes. If the bruise is >3 inches across and/or is getting bigger, it’s a trip to ED.

Regarding play, a prudent person may well consider it a risk factor too far…
