Choosing a new computer...
From an earlier thread...

It looks like I will have to wait a while longer for my preferred option. Up until recently I had been a fan of the Apple Mac. Very intuitive and very gooey. However, it is now a fashion item that is associated with aspirations of higher net worth. You see plenty of them lying around in movies and TV dramas. It’s another piece of kit for designer kitchens. Also, they are very popular with yummy mummies who brandish them with aplomb whilst sipping skinny lattes in posh high-end high street pubs. It’s a personal statement that says I can afford more than a piece of shit Dell even though I only use it for emails and FaceTime. It’s a little bit ironic, don’t you think that the people who once chose a Mac for its unique operating system and quirkiness have now been replaced by another example of middle class herd mentality. I do like the Mac construction quality but unfortunately the folk who use them are enough to put one off. Hence, my longer wait for the Surface Pro, with full Windows 8 and the Intel Haswell chip. |

Don't you think you might be taking this class hatred stuff a bit too far? It seems to be pervading pretty trivial areas of your life. |

Sustained I’m not sure you get what I am saying. If a new Mac had a real advantage in terms of functionality over the competition I would buy one to replace the one I already have. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over having to accept the social stigma of getting it out in public. With the passing of Steve Jobs, it is likely that in the medium to long term, Apple will not enjoy the same sort of cult advantage over its competition. As for class you either have it or you don’t. Standing for something, winning when you need to and being humble when you should be are good examples. It’s not a bought-in item that comes with Country Club membership. I see my musings more as political knockabout than class hatred. You merely adopt a position and decide on how you are going to spin it. |
My next computer will be a Mac. My Dell is on its knees but I'm determined to wring every last drop of life from it because I'm fed up of replacing PCs every couple of years. I had a beautiful Toshiba Satellite which in its first flush of youth contracted a nasty virus which wiped the OS. Reinstalling the OS proved problematic and frustrating and a second visit to the laptop clinic.
I have an HP Windows 8 laptop and I detest it. I hate the assumption that I only want to do this or that from a particular point when in fact I may want to go elsewhere and so have to hunt around the most unfriendly user face I have ever used to try and access a machine that seems determined to thwart me. I spend most of my time on my iPad now (hence my recent proliferation in odd typos). If I must learn how to use a computer from scratch again I'd rather learn on a Mac. They are aesthetically beautiful, virus free and will go perfectly with my designer jeans and custom built kitchen. :lolsign: |

It reads as if you actually hold a grudge against all sorts of people because of the class of the parents that they were born to, or because they've chosen to be known by a more conventional name because they are not happy with the one they were given by their parents, or because they have some aspiration to improve their lot in life. You may mean it to all sound jokey, tongue-in-cheek stuff, but that's not how it reads to me. |

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1625110.html Mac's have just had an easy ride up until recently because of market share with most malware being directed at Windows. That's now changed with Mac users being so internet facing that you will need to install good reputation internet security software to protect OS X. You wouldn't want the sort of viruses that can't be eliminated with Dettol messing with your designer kitchen. And all that comfort eating brought about from the stress and worry of system restores may make the Armani jeans a tighter fit... |
Apple will cost the earth because of the brand name.
They will try to covinse you that they are the answer to your prayers and even that the age of paper is dead because of their storage facilities BUT is the age of paper dead? I offer you.................. http://vimeo.com/61275290 and leave you to decide (ignore the language its not important) |
My last change was to a "MacBook Air" :)
I should have made the change years & years ago ! The build quality, speed & all round feel makes it a pleasure to use. |
I know it's an old joke but it is relevant to this thread ...
Q: What's the difference between a Mac and a PC? A: A Mac works. |
In the early years the PC v Mac arguments were fairly simple. The PC was aimed at business users while the Mac was aimed at folk like designers who needed something that was more Gooey. It was often said that Windows operating system would fall over more often than OS X but market share in the ratio of say, 9:1 would have magnified that finding.
Today the argument has become more philosophical or ontological. Are you a PC or a Mac and who is the more brainwashed. Where does the Mac user who loads Boot Camp to run Windows on their Mac stand? I would suggest its something to do with the Apple logo? The battleground is now more tied. Based on market share and price PC’s tend to be the winner while Mac’s remain the choice for designers, the more elite and the anti Microsoft community. There is no argument over the superb product design and build quality of the Mac. At an earlier point in time the Mac could claim better security but more recently that is no longer the case. |
