Behind the candelabra
Other than his battle against cancer and his marriage to La Zeta Jones Michael Douglas hasn't really impinged on my adulthood very much.
His most memorable role almost certainly as the sidekick of Karl Maldens nose in 'The Streets of San Francisco'.Maldens nose (incidentally) looked like a photo of the surface of the moon printed on a puce golf ball and cemented to the front of his face .........it was the type of nose anybody would be proud to star alongside. Some fairly forgettable thrillers and that's about it. Ditto Matt Damon,Scott Bakula and most of the stars of this film are in the same boat;nobody has ever asked them to act......until now. This is an utterly enrapturing account of the relationship between the Damon character in a script that calls out the talent these guys obviously possess but are never allowed to display Its a dense, complex script in which no-one emerges either wholly good or bad.It confronts the reality of the entertainment business unflinchingly in all its tinsel town tawdriness and its power to utterly corrupt everything it touches. Its simultaneously laugh aloud funny in many places Best film of the year IMHO and Douglas will take some beating for the Oscar this year |

Undoubtedly a huge star of his time who could hold his own alongside Elvis or Frank. Liberaces persona unfortunately seems to have dwindled as the years have gone by. I think that has more to do with musical legacy than stage presence.
A new generation will hopefully know more about the man through this film which incidentally is more than just a poke of fun at the man. It is very very good. |

I'm not 100% sure how things work in America.... but surely if it's had a cinema release, it's eligible for an Oscar. It looks great. Definitely on my list.
