Bull Whips
Can anyone recommend a reliable supplier who makes or sells top quality bull whips ?
I don't have any experience or knowledge of these instruments but would like to broaden my experiences. Presumably the quality is in the type of leather, plaiting, colours, length etc. How is the weight of the tail or tip varied, and how does this affect the impact ? Is there a style which is only for the ultra masochists ? Some of the ones I have seen look really crummy and cheap. However , I have noticed this one:- http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25490 It doesn't seem too bad, albeit a little cheesy and lightweight with the Betty Page trademark. Any advice and recommendations are gratefully received. Kind Regards, Rimmer.

You can either buy something that looks a bit like a bull whip but handles like spaghetti, or you can buy the real deal which will look like, feel like, handle like and smell like quality leather and craftsmanship.
I've got Alex Cobra whips, Essentia whips and one beauty from the English Whip Company (I think, it was a few years ago...maybe English Whipmaker...) http://www.essentiawhips.co.uk/ http://cobrawhips.com/ You're looking at three figures and several weeks on the waiting list. Alternatively you could try nylon as a cheaper more lightweight alternative. I have a gorgeous nylon snakewhip that is so easy to use. Tony at Essential does nylon bullwhips for £175

Bullwhips isn't really my thing.... but Alex Cobra (of the cobrawhips link in LA's post above) is a wonderful guy and you can be sure you'll get a whip full of love.

Thank you all for the recommendations.
As I say, I have no experience with bull-whips but want to correct this oversight. I am a bit of a tart for quality leather craftsmanship. The aestheticism of a nicely weighted bull-whip which hangs in a curving droop like a threatening semi erect cock is really quite potent. Perhaps they should be called cock-whips. The details of all the various types and options is a little bewildering and more involved than I had thought. Given the not inconsiderable prices I am a bit abashed to approach with all the money but totally clueless. A mid length (4' to 5') whip that is nicely weighted and stiff with a heavy end would be about right. It would be perfect if made in deep Black leather with Red and White detailing. My new carbon fibre bike* is finished in these colours and it also gives lots and lots of sustained pleasurable pain. The reward of summiting a long arduous climb is exactly the same as that received after a prolonged administration of CP. It is a fulfilling sense of achievement, euphoria, and relief which is highly improving and addictive. Depending on where I go, both are surrounded by admirable breath taking natural beauty which affirm the realities of life. Kind Regards, Rimmer. * Ok, ok. You will no doubt be eager to know all the details... ...Well, it is a custom made full carbon frame and forks with Campagnolo carbon group set and ultra light Mavic wheels**. The whole bike weighs less than 7kg ! It is almost on the legal weight limit. Alberto Contador would be honoured to ride such a work of art. Although I use the term 'ride' quite wrongly as I don't really ride it up hill, rather I just sit on it as it goes up of it's own accord ! Fell off and scratched it yesterday whilst riding over a cattle grid. Bugger it. ** It is true what they say; if you have money to spend on a bike then spend it on a set of top end wheels. The weight saving is made 'twice' as the gain is seen in reducing both the gravitational mass and also the polar inertial mass. I'm not convinced of the physics behind this statement because there is quite a bit of debate regarding the supposed equivalence of gravitational and inertial mass, but I must say it really does work on the bicycle. They also look cool. Just the other day a young Lady passed me in an open topped sports car and shouted out "Lovin' yer impressive pair of minimally reduced polar inertial masses". "Thanks" I replied back whilst blushing with pride, "Do you want to stop and feel my gravitational mass ? It's really tiny !". She just put her stilettoed foot down hard, oooh yeah baby !

I can vouch for the quality of Tony at Essentia's work which is first class. I bought one for Mistress as a present and have been on the receiving end, ouch!

advice, or maybe not?
In my view there is two ways of looking at this?
(1) You can buy a cheep whip and if you don’t get on with it you end up throwing it in the bottom of a toy bag never to see the light of day again. ("Well that was a waste of £100”) And lets face it if its cheep you will struggle to learn how to throw anyway! So chances it will, end up in the bag, nobody body will buy a used cheep whip! (2) You can purchase a good quality whip around £250-£300, if you don’t get on with it you can sell it and get most of your money back, so based on £250 you could easy see £200 back. As I said a cheep whip is never going to resell as a second hand item. The loss works out about the same, but with the second option there is a higher chance you will learn faster how to throw, also you have something then will be part of you for the rest of your life. It takes time to grow into a whip, when it becomes part of you, at that point will never want to sell it. By the way I have been throwing whips for longer than I would care to think, so my advice is based on someone who has a major single tail problem LOL Skooby Last edited by footer; 10-11-2014 at 20:44. |
