Blimey, that was ages ago. I've now switched to farms and exotic islands.

About once a year I look at the provision of "mobile communications devices" as we used to say in Megolithic Era.

I need to equip six people with whatever kit is necessary to keep in touch with them inside the U.K.None of us is very tech savvy, most of us are advancing into middle age.We operate mostly from our cars or at best from construction site offices or from hotel rooms in the evenongs (or evenings as some people say)

We need to be able to send voicemails and emails,to get information about local suppliers and other businesses etc etc.We will often need to send or receive quite large email attachments (including blueprints/specifications etc)

The kit needs to be VERY robust, easy to operate for largish peeps with largish hands etc etc.

Right now we use Dell laptops with 3g dongles and conventional Samsung C3350 phones. Our network is Orange.

Are iPhones what we need or something else? What are the pros and cons of other kit?

All help gratefully received
I’m waiting on the launch of the Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro, expected around the end of Q1 2013. I suspect MS is waiting for the fourth generation Intel Core processors which should be out around that time. So instead of Ivy Bridge it might be Haswell architecture.

A tablet with Windows 8 Pro and full Office desktop capability, 4GB RAM and 128 GB SSD and only a shade larger than the iPad.

Might be pricey but it looks like the Mutts Nuts for power users who don’t want to carry around a brick but need Outlook, Excel, Word, Project etc capabilities. So serious people will be able to do proper work on it.

As for smartphones Blackberry 10 is almost here. New OS and one the technophiles will love…

Both the above should have strong advantages over the i-offerings.

By way of thanking people who pointed me in the right direction we've now upgraded to Galaxy "Ace" phones -these were FOC as not the "latest" thang

Instead of laptops we are using(unbranded) Android Superpads. They are a total revelation at sub £400.00 for ALL 6 machines and seem to have the same functionality as the Dells (£400.00 each two years ago)

Very happy
