I got a private message from a guest but I can't respond to guest. I am just wondering why it's possible for guest to message me without having to create an account? It's also pointless since they will never get a reply.

I "think" that a prospective member can pm existing members while awaiting approval - or not - from a mod

The vast majority of prospective members are spammers and we delete them as soon as we see them which would change any of their actions to guest

That's my best guess to be honest. Not hugely technical!

When I get a chance I will check the settings for pending members
