Other people's houses....
Query - if I stay with friends overnight and log in to the web via their router/hub, can they tell which websites I've been on?
Similarly, if I stay in a hotel can the management see what I'm perving?

If you're using someone else's machine I'd say select the 'delete the last hour' option, and do this every fifty minutes or so.
The browsing history is only saved on the machine you access from, so what is viewed on the pc won't show up in the browsing history of any other machines connected to the same router. Well, not in my case anyway - having just checked. |

The advice on deleting browser history is sound. The OP implies using his own device to access the net through a third party hub. I think the answer is yes, the device administrator could probably look at web stats. However, your friends would need a degree of technical knowledge – and the desire – to delve into their router to do that. Hotels don’t care. My experience is that they put filters on their own PC’s (where available for public use) but provide unrestricted access if you use your own laptop /smartphone.

Apologies for returning to this one. If I use my work laptop in a hotel/B&B, log on via their hub or router, and then view adult or porn sites, am I in danger of being discovered by the techies at work?

Regardless of how well you try to blot out 'histories etc' the works techies would be able to find out if they search hard enough

The work techies may have set up a flagging system where certain words entered into the search engine may set off a report landing into their inbox. It's not worth the risk.

One of my ex-clients lost his job because he was sending me and another Mistress emails from work. He'd used the word 'anal' which set off a flagging system that was picked up by the techies. They then searched his emails to see what he was up to. He was sacked for gross misconduct.

I haven't emailed from work but have used my work laptop to access my hotmail account as my understanding was you were working on another server whilst in hotmail. I have viewed DVD's on the laptop when away in a hotel but doubt if that would get picked up as our IT dept is pretty limited.
I know that you can get a forensic search of a computer which details absolutely everything, but to be used in a court, even an unfair dismissal tribunal, these have to be carried out by a specialist licenced company and cost about £2000+. I learnt that from a lawyer for a firm I worked for a few years ago who were in the process of getting rid of somebody for gross misconduct with the eveidence having been found on his laptop, had he fought the dismissal simply having seen the information (not porn) or printing it was not permissable as evidence. |
