Well it's January 1st and I've managed to survive.Mrs Bob had a very bad night last night, her legs were cramping every hour or so.I was up rubbing them then trying to get back to sleep.
Snow is belting down here in Newcastle,it's been a while since we have had snow on New Year, it was snowing lightly when I came in as a "first foot".
The kids are out in the snow rolling big snowballs for their snowmen. Just as well we hadn't planned on going out for dinner today to the pub, don't think the car would get through.

Here in the south its glorious sun shine melting away last nights frost
Snow showers down here on the Kent coast but, fortunately, not settling (well not at the moment anyway)
I had a longish walk home from the NYE festivities and it was a lovely cold and crisp night. Really pleasant walking weather and seeing the odd late night reveller and wishing them a happy NYE
Tried to snow here a bit this morning but was way too cold for any meaningful snow. Had a fantastic walk out this morning, really got rid of the cobwebs.
Mind it is still rather chilly here.

I've never known ice and snow to linger for as long as this over large parts of the country. I looked ay the 5-day forecast last night to find that minimum temperatures below freezing are likely to persist that period of time at least with daytime temperatures rising not much more than 3 degrees in most places. I feel it'll be a while yet before the hard compacted ice clears from the pavements up here.

A few days on and how right you were Peter, and it is not getting any easier is it? Although we have fresh snow where I live, there is still a layer of ice underneath, I suspect it may be a few days yet before that goes. It is going to take quite a thaw to get rid of it.
Great to see some kids out on sledges this afternoon making the most of the snow.
Even London got heavy snow last night, and it continued intermittently throughout today. It's settled in unfrequented spots, but the main thoroughfares are mostly cleared.
I enjoyed an occasional meet-up with some male subbie pals in a west-end pub tonight, followed by a meal in China-Town. Turn-out was depleted somewhat by the effect of the weather on the transport system, but there were still four of us to gather and natter.
The pub was initially quite crowded, but emptied out after 8 pm, and the restaurant was almost empty. They seemed very glad to have us :)
The bus ride home was peaceful and uneventful.

Out walking with the mutt this morning, I walked past a couple of people "de-icing" their cars both who reported the car temp guages showing it at -11C. :icon_eek:
Thought it was a bit cold myself! :eh:
I have been unable to work for the whole week because of the snow and it is causing other problems. I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plenty of Snow in East London.
I did my good Samaritan bit yesterday. I got a call from my other ‘alf telling me she was stranded. She had waited 40 mins for a bus when the bus turned up the driver announced the buses were no longer travelling to our estate due to problems with ‘the hill’. I dug the car out and went to pickher up. Got back to our estate and got a call to pick up my son. Off again. Came back to the estate and there were a couple of people waiting for a bus. I told them there weren’t any buses and they looked lost so I dropped my son off and went back and picked the two at the bus stop and drove them where they wanted to go.... only about 4 miles. I came back and the same thing happened again. I couldn’t ignore the 4 people waiting at the bus stop ....it would have been a very long wait! Offered them a lift especially as one ,a young lady looked, very cold. Came back again and two more people at the bus stop. I gave them the news and asked whether they could arrange alternative transport. They said yes so I quickly drove home.
Like Forest I then travelled into London to the Hoops and Grapes in Aldgate when a friend of mine was having an early retirement do. He booked 100 free drinks and food for 45 people and only 9 of us turned up due to the weather. It ended up being a very enjoyable evening. Tube back was not the usual service. Instead of one train I ended using four as first three stopped early on route.
Its winter and it should snow in winter!

Not good down here. The taxis (even though charging a time and a half and thank God for them today) are giving up and going home...

I've had many trips to Uppsala during the winter. Always more snow than we have here and everything works and life goes on.
Over here there are too many cars on the road and too many clueless drivers...a deadly combination :old_smile:
-22 o c recorded in Scottish Highlands .... now that is an Antartic temp!

Hi all,
Well it took me 2hr 40 minutes to travel 22 miles yesterday to get supplies in. On the way the car temp sensor never rose above -14 and at one point dropped to -19.5! Now that is cold!
Here in the rural Scottish Borders the temperature has never risen above -9 all day and last night it got down to -21!
Looks pretty but wooo it is cold.

Just got an e mail from my friend who lives in Northumberland, little village called Beadnell, (next to Seahouses) She has been cut off for 3 days, no milk, papers, post and they have had a 4 hour power cut. She's had to clear 4ft of snow from path to get to her gate.

Sounds bad - and as an aside I have to say I've visited that part of the country a few times and it is one of the most scenic and beautiful parts of the UK coastline you could wish to see. :) Northumberland is a wonderful part of the world.

It is indeed a very beautiful place, travel north out of Seahouses and you come to a mass of red stone work that is Bamburgh Castle, It's very impressive.
She has taken pictures of the icicles hanging from the rocks on the beach. I want her to put them on line so I can see them. It's funny but you never think that the beach will be covered in snow because of the salt content in the air but it was white and icy.
And mentioning tempratures, yesterday morning at 6:34 the temprature [I]inside[I] a car at Otterburn in Northumberland measured minus 18
Low tempratures all around.

It is indeed and I also have fond memories of sitting for a few hours one glorious afternoon watching a game of cricket on the adjoining ground before going for a walk on the beach around the other side of the castle.

It's snowing again this morning in the leafy shires.
Looking forward to the weekend when a warm front is meant to hit from the Atlantic. Wind and rain...melting snow...I'm absolutely looking forward to it :old_smile:

Snow this morning, bitterly cold and now it's just wet outside. Snow has gone and wind is drying the place ready for the next snow.

Yes, it is beautiful out at the moment. I've even opened up all the windows in the house to get some fresh air blowing through. :)

lol NO!!! I prefer the original version and then preferably sung live at the City Hall in December 1970's when Lindisfarne sold out for the full month. Those concerts were great.
Anyway was at the holy ground last night and sure enough the fog came down so a lovely chorus of Fog on the Tyne was sung during the 2nd half.

No, they had become Lindesfarne but they were still one of the "cheap local bands" that got booked to play at the Uni. They started to release thier records not long after I was there but still had to do the gigs they had signed up for before. My girlfriend at the time was a fan of theirs and I remember taking her twice to see them playing the University Theatre.
