Cataract removal

I'm having a cataract removed next month. Is there any reason why I shouldn't session a week later?

Best to ask the surgeon who carries out the procedure. They may require detailed descriptions of the activities you intend to participate in before offering advice.

Seriously though, it's been some years since I had cataract surgery and although I describe it as on a par with going to the dentist but with a bit more technology, I would be inclined to leave it a bit longer than a week.

Maybe if you couched your enquiry in terms of "How long before I undertake strenuous exercise?" e.g. running or weight lifting.

Basically need to mitigate the following risk factors:

Anything that raises intraocular pressure, which correlates with blood pressure, which could disrupt the healing incision, whether fine sutures are used or not. Any disruption could displace the new lens.

Anything that might introduce bacteria to the eye. Watersports, sploshing, blindfolds etc ?

Obviously, any physical activities like violent bending over that can indirectly injure or strain the eye area...

Certain physical activities can increase intraocular pressure, risk introducing infection, or disrupt the healing process.

The main physical risks to avoid are:-

- Rubbing or touching the eye. Even if it feels itchy or irritated, rubbing can introduce bacteria, cause infection, or damage the surgical incision.

- Strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting. Avoid lifting heavy weights, and avoid intense exercise or activities that strain the body. These can raise eye pressure and risk complications like bleeding.

- Bending over or sudden head movements. Limit bending at the waist or strenuous reaching overhead, as this increases pressure in the eye and can strain the healing incision.

- Swimming or using hot tubs. Avoid for the first few weeks due to risk of infection from water contaminants, chlorine, or bacteria.

- Exposure to dust, dirt, wind, or irritants. Stay away from dusty environments, gardening, or windy conditions without eye protection so as to prevent irritation or infection.

In essence, just play light and teasing, or not at all if you can’t lay off the hard n heavy stuff.
