Mindfulness sure is a thing

I've used it myself and it helped. Music is great too. Whether these need to be introduced in all schools is an interesting question.

In terms of those struggling with mental health issues distraction is often very important. Sufferers can have very active brains and struggle to quiet them down. Lot of overthinking out there (guilty myself) and things that can change that are good. Can be anything - music, TV, exercise, crafts, jigsaws, etc etc - move the brain on to something else rather than the spiral of inward thoughts

So complicated and individual

Sort of, but I maintain that music is the original art form, the progenitor of social interaction. If mental health is your problem then playing and creating music will help. It runs deep.

Music needs to be promoted as a non-examined activity in all schools, even those whose parents lack imagination…indeed especially those !

Kind Regards,
Rimmer.

As you say - sort of.

It might help

It works for some and not for others. I think it’s great but it’s too simplistic to think it’s the answer for everyone

Of course. I doubt there is any ‘magic’ bullet but daft not to promote the easy wins which can only be of benefit anyway. It’s all about preparing and nourishing the seed bed for healthy growth. Feed and tender them but let them grow.

Did anyone ever lay on their death bed and bemoan their life had been blighted by a love of music ?

Kind Regards,
Rimmer.

Sure

Anything that helps is good. My concern is that - in this thread anyway - there seems to be a concentration on one thing (at a time to be fair) when I personally believe we should be thinking in broader terms

AIUI music is compulsory on the national curriculum for kids age 5-14. Not in academies but they are “expected” to teach it. Now that may not be to the level discussed earlier but it it still means that an awful lot of children do get access to the subject in schools

Plus, of course, there is outside school where there is a heck of a choice of music which children listen to

It just feels to me that music is fairly well covered already.

Not really. Music is often paid lip service in the curriculum and is too easily squeezed in budgets.

I’m talking about the emotional and psychological reward gained from playing a musical instrument not just being ‘taught’ to appreciate listening to different styles of music. To learn and fully enjoy an instrument requires owning and permanently having that instrument, and often the interest is not initially there until child-instrument-lesson come together when the mood suddenly takes at the right time. YouTube has some great free tutorial series* and so really just the musical instrument needs supplying for free.

Agreed though, it is not a panacea (nothing is) but it is a sanctuary for life once realised. Good for the soul, even more so when playing and interacting.

Kind Regards,
Rimmer.

* Just add guitar and child then let it grow…
